About BestIn

How it works

Someone asks for the best of something in a city: a burger, a pint, a quiet café to work from. People answer with a pick and a line on why it’s the one. Votes move the best answers to the top, so the top answer is always the current best, and it keeps changing as places open, close and get better or worse.

Anyone can ask, whether you live there or you’re visiting. Answers mostly come from locals, but anyone who has been counts.

How the ranking works

• Answers are ranked by net votes (upvotes minus downvotes).
• One vote per person per answer. You can change or take back your vote.
• You can’t vote on your own answer, and each place can only be answered once per question, so votes aren’t split.
• Nobody can pay to be ranked higher. There are no sponsored answers.

Where the first answers came from

BestIn started in Dublin, and its first questions and answers were gathered from discussions on the r/BestInDublin community on Reddit, summarised and linked back to the original thread (“Originally discussed on Reddit”). Reddit usernames aren’t copied. Those answers start with the vote counts they had there, and from then on they rise and fall with votes here like any other.

New towns and cities

BestIn launches a town or city once there are locals ready to answer questions about it. If yours isn’t here yet, request it. Everyone who votes for it is notified when it launches.
